The Snake River
From its origin near the Continental Divide in Yellowstone National Park to its junction with the Columbia River and into the Pacific Ocean, the Snake River breathes life into the mountain valleys and high plains of Idaho as it weaves its way through the Pacific Northwest. This majestic river is a source of wildlife, natural beauty, electric power, and agricultural water for the Idaho Falls region. The Snake River also feeds the area’s tourism destinations with hunting, fishing, camping and other outdoor recreation.
Historically, this river has played an important role with Native Americans and early settlers of Idaho. Lewis and Clark, John C. Fremont, and Benjamin Bonneville, among others, explored its waters; the Oregon Trail ran through southern Idaho along the river. In fact, many of Idaho’s most prosperous cities are located along the Snake River or its tributaries.
